Il Ristorante del Rientri

(The Restaurant of Re-entry)

"Table for two?" the waiter asked. Hudson and his wife were led to one of the many tables under the twilight sky. Strangely, dining at this restaurant was strictly Al Fresco. They sat down at a rather large table for two and could not help noticing an 'X' at the middle of it. Both of them were doing freelance food reviews for one of the local magazines, and being both adventurous and food lovers, decided to try a new restaurant at the outskirts of the city which promised "a revolutionary way of cooking".

After placing their orders, Hudson had a short walk around the area. All the tables were as big as, or bigger than the one that they sat, and each had an 'X' the size of a regular dinner plate in the middle. "The luxury of space in the country," he thought. There was also a long cylindrical chimney rising up from the middle of the kitchen until Boom! A small explosion sent an object far up into the night sky. No, it wasnt a chimney. What was it?

Hudson returned to his seat just as the waiter emerged from the kitchen carrying three plates, one was larger than the other two, and a boat of gravy. He laid the smaller plates in front of Hudson and his wife, while the other plate was placed right on top of the 'X'. Then he waited.

"What are you waiting for?" Hudsons wife asked the waiter inquisitively.
"Oh, I take it that you havent been here before? Then I do not want to spoil the surprise," he replied with a smile, and looked at his watch.
"What is that supposed to mean?" Hudson thought, "and what"

The waiter had looked up suddenly into the sky. There was a small bright speck that was brighter than the stars, and orange in colour. It vanished as both of them looked up. Their mouths opened to ask, but did not manage to get further. With a bang a roughly oval object landed exactly on the plate above the 'X', smoking. The waiter had put on two thick mitts and pried open the coverings of the object. The aroma of sizzling beef steaks filled the air. Taking a large fork, he served both steaks and topped them off with a generous amount of gravy by the side. "Enjoy!" he said as Hudson and his wife stared at him with their mouths open.
